Quek Sechariah Sheng Scoops $481,000 Triton Short Deck Turbo Title

Singapores Quek Sechariah Sheng upset the established applecart in Montenegro when he took down the $25k buy-in Short Deck Turbo title for $481,000 – in a game he described as so good for beginners - everybody has a chance!

The 64 entries for what turned out to be a quick day’s work included Triton’s legendary ambassador duo Jason Koon and Tom Dwan, as well as the Greenwood brothers Sam and Luc with Ike Haxton and Mikita Badziakouski also part of a super-strong field.

None of these illustrious names would survive the frantic pace of the action-packed 36-card game and the HKD 12.032 million ($1.533 million) prizepool would be handed out to a top eight that included Rui Cao, Daniel Dvoress and Paul Phua – all showing excellent form this week.

Canada’s Peter Jetten is another who has excelled in Montenegro, but both he and Phua must be starting to imagine a Triton jinx exists – 21 cashes between them but no trophy, and that wouldn’t change last night.

Down to the final three, Jetten and Phua were joined by Quek, by day a poker agent, who arranges games in Bangkok, and a man who has obviously learned from his charges. “When you watch your players every day, you learn things,” Quek told the Triton press crew, adding: “Some of them gave me tips.”

With Dwan, Dan Jungleman Cates and Timofey Trueteller Kuznetzov watching on – apparently waiting for Phua to finish so they could start a big money cash game – they would get their wish, but it took some time.

When Phua fell in 3rd spot late into the night, a lengthy heads-up battle was not what anyone wanted – and as luck would have it there was only one hand required, and it went the way of Quek, who admitted afterwards: “I’m still a little bit shaky!”

Final results

1 Quek Sechariah Sheng $481,000
2 Peter Jetten $325,000
